Best way to get from Amalfi coast to Sicily?

We are traveling from the Amalfi Coast to Sicily. Is it best (and easiest) to ferry, fly or drive?

Sicily where? It’s a big region.
You can fly from Naples to Palermo or Catania or Trapani (approx. 1 hour flight plus the time to get to NAP and various security procedures)
You can take a train from Salerno (at least 5 hours to Messina).
You can drive then take a ferry across (at least 5 hours to Messina)
You can take a ferry from Salerno to Messina (9 hours at least).

Hello Karin, I think this is a question of time, cost and preference.

Driving on the Amalfi coast is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced and you don't mention a car so I'm guessing mass transit the best options.

From Amalfi you can ferry to Salerno and ferry or train to Sicily from there. Or ferry/bus to Sorrento, train to Naples and take the ferry and/or fly. The ferry is long - overnight is an option - and flying is short so it depends on what kind of trip you want to have.

If you have the time I think the ferry could be an interesting option but most people probably fly to spend as much time "on the ground" during their vacation. You should also check the various times and costs because long haul ferries often only run certain days or at very specific times. Flights obviously are more frequent and will give you more options.

Have a great trip,

Yes, I didn't realize that ferries were so long? We do want to spend the least time "traveling" as possible. But, of course, money is always an issue. I am thinking the fastest way to do it is fly from Rome to Sicily and see the Amalfi coast at the end of our trip instead of first? That might be a more efficient path to travel?

You don't mention anything about the rest of your itinerary but flying from Rome is certainly an option - but you'll essentially face the same decision coming back from Sicily to the Amalfi coast. Either fly back into Naples from Sicily and make your way to Amalfi or ferry into Salerno or Naples make the trip to the coast.

Have fun putting the plan together. I know the options can be overwhelming and understand that Amalfi is one of the hardest areas to get to, but that is probably part of the appeal.

Have a great trip,

AIR: Amalfi to Naples airport is about 1.5 hours. Airport security and boarding procedures another 1.5 hours. Flight (to Catania or Palermo) 1 hour. Deplaning, baggage claim, and going to city, another 1.5 hours. Total 5.5 hours.

TRAIN. Amalfi to Salerno 1 hour. Train Salerno-Palermo about 9 hours. Train Salerno-Catania about 7 hours.

DRIVE. Amalfi to Catania (7-8 hours). Amalfi to Palermo (8-9 hours). Including ferry but does not include pit stops.
