Best way to Cinque Terre from Venice by train?

Should we go through Florence or Milan and where are the best places to compare the two routes?

Use Trenitalia to compare routes. Both are very indirect, I personally prefer to go through Florence as the leg from La Spezia to the CT is shorter on the regional train than catching the regional train from Genoa to the CT. If you do go through Milan, try to look for a faster train from Genoa to a town near the CT (or ideally one of the few that stop in one of the towns) then switch to the regional for a shorter hop.
