Hi. We're traveling to Naples this October. I'd like to know if you can advise if I should buy the museum tickets online (is it the Ingresso ticket?) before I arrive at the museum. Is there an advantage to getting it online rather than at the museum ticket counter (other than saving time)? I also read that some exhibits close somewhere between 12:30-2:30pm. Is that a year-round occurrence? Just want to experience the museum in the best way as RS highly recommends it. Thanks.
We went this summer and just bought tickets that day at the museum ticket counter. We did not encounter a long wait in line for tickets. Hope you have a wonderful trip. The museum is very good. We did the museum one day and Pompeii the next.
In September this year, the wait was 20 minutes in the ticket line. If you want to buy the Campania Arte Card, that wait may be shorter, but I don't know. Lots of interesting English speaking people in the ticket line, but relatively few Americans.
My impression when there was that the crowds go to Pompeii, a much smaller segment take the time to go to the museum as well, seeing that is out of the way in Naples. As a result, you might have to wait in line for a little while, but still easy to just wait until you arrive to get tickets.
Thanks to those who gave input.
If other travelers have recently been to the museum, please offer additional tips. Thanks again.
I really wouldn't overplan in October. This attraction is not as popular as Sorrento or Pompeii. I recommend that you see the Farnese Marbles as well as the Pompeii collection. I doubt there is a lunch closure, but maybe they don't have the extra guards needed for the ... erotica ... room.
I don't remember Rick's descriptions, but part of the reason for going to the museum is the close up view and the fact that you are seeing original works, rather than the predominant reproductions placed onsite in Pompeii. When the museum is crowded, this is harder to do.
We bought walk-up tickets, but it was over six years ago. We enjoyed strolling around town and finding a cheap. local lunch. When we had "famous" pizza the next day, we had to wait in line for a table for 45 minutes. Just plan for that, and be glad if it's better in October.
I was there last October and waited in line maybe five minutes, so I wouldn't bother getting tickets in advance. All the exhibits were open--there were no lunchtime closures. Be sure to give yourself several hours here--the collection is magnificent. Also, Rick has an audio tour of the museum, so you can listen to him on your smartphone as you tour the exhibits.
