Best way to bring back wine to the US?

We picked up a few bottles of wine to bring back to the US. What is the best way to transport it back? In suitcase? In carry-on? Any rules about bringing back wine?

You can't take any liquid over 3 ounces in your carry-on. You are allowed up to one liter without having to pay duty and up to two cases for personal consumption. (You will have to pay for excess luggage on the plane.)

After one liter, Customs can impose a duty on your wine. However, it is so small, many customs officers don't bother. That's not to say they won't, it's just not worth their while. So, be friendly and forthright with them and you'll have no problem.

You'll need to check it, we wrap in bubble wrap and ziplock bags, never had a problem!

Bob,

As the others mentioned the Wine will have to go in the checked luggage. One question, are you in Europe now? If not you might check Magellan's as they have padded plastic Wine shipping bags that would likely be a good solution.

I faced a similar problem on my return from France and Italy this year as I had bought several bottles of Wine. Packing these in carry on would have allowed for more "care" in transit but I knew that wouldn't be an option. The solution I used was to place each bottle inside a plastic bag and seal it well with Duct tape (I usually pack a few folded plastic bags & small "travel size" roll of Duct tape, which I also obtained from Magellans). If the bottles were to be broken, the bags would hopefully keep the wine from soaking into my clothing.

Each of the bottles was individually wrapped in clothing, with "soft" items below and on top as well. Fortunately, everything arrived intact which is somewhat surprising as I use "soft sided" luggage.

I might not be that fortunate next time so I may order some of the Wine carriers for the
next trip.

Happy travels!

We brought back two bottles of wine, a bottle of lemoncello, two bottles of large olive oil and about 6 little bottles of olive oil. We had convertable back packs with wheels...so they had a metal frame within...we put the bottles in plastic and then rolled them up in piles of dirty clothes. We flew in to Washington then home to Orlando...No breaks..no spills and no problems from customs.
