Best Way from Verona to MXP

Thank you all for being so helpful in planning our family’s upcoming trip! I cannot wait to pay it forward. We are now working on the finer details and I realized we have to get home 😬.

We have a 16:00 plane to catch out of MXP. We will be staying in Verona so we need the easiest/best way to get to Verona with two kids (10 & 13) and two adults. We are looking for a good and reliable way to get to the airport from Verona (near the coliseum) to the airport. We found one shuttle that seemed reasonably priced that says it takes around 3.5 hours. It’s called GoOpti. Has anyone had experience with them? We plan to take trains almost the entire trip but the times are a little tricky for getting to the airport with a little wiggle room for error. Any other suggestions of good ways to go? Thanks you!

How are the train times “tricky”?
There are fast trains about every 30 min to Milano Centrale that take 1 hr 20 min
From Milano Centrale take the Malpensa Express which runs every half hour and takes just about an hour
You can easily get to MXP before noon

Be sure you are searching on the official site

What price did the shuttle quote? I would imagine close to 300 euros?

They quoted around 30 Euro per person. The train times seemed to go early and then a gap that would end up late. Maybe because it’s a Sunday?

You are seeing the exact problem with Trenitalia that I wrote about several days ago. See this thread and the “workaround”:suggested.

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/transportation/problem-with-setting-the-time-on-trenitalia-website#top

Basically, the Trenitalia website reverts to local time in Italy no matter what time you enter in your search. Right now, for example, at noon in Seattle, it is 9 pm in Italy, and Trenitalia only shows trains running after that time on August 20. Then it shows trains starting early the next day, with the note that they are, indeed the following day (August 21).

So to see morning trains from Verona to Milano Centrale for August 20, set your search date to August 19. You will see fast Frecce trains from Verona to Milan at 8:32, 8:46, 9:02, and so on. The travel time is just over an hour.

I just bought tickets from Verona to Bolzano with this trick and it worked fine.

You could also check Italo, as I don’t think their website has this same timing issue.

Thank you for all of this! Good tip about the time glitch. We think the train is a great option. We are a bit concerned about one member of our party who has mobility issues and and we’re thinking not transferring and just taking a shuttle might be better for her since it’s going to be a long day of travel with the flight too. That’s why I was wondering if anyone has tried GoOpti or another shuttle.

If the shuttle service charges only €30 per person I would go with that. It’s cheaper than the train and just as fast.

Agree with Roberto and the shuttle.

While it’s rare, there can be train delays for various reasons. I can think of 4 different times where the train we were on was delayed for hours. Sometimes not even at a station, but stopped between stations.

Plus you’d have to change trains in Milan to get to MXP. And it’s quite a walk from the station to checkin. A shuttle would drop you close to checkin.

I don’t know what the rest of your itinerary looks like or how much time you have in Verona but we like to be much closer to the airport on the day of our flight just in case of transport issues. Train strikes, road closures, staffing issues, you never know.

Why not spend the night before someplace close to MXP like Stresa on Lago Maggiore? Come early the day before and have the afternoon, evening, and next morning to enjoy the lake And not have to rush around and worry about the long transfer to the airport.

Thanks all!

After a bit of poking around the travel forum and looking at online reviews we decided to go with Go Opti. We will be up late the night before our flight because we'll be attending an opera at the Verona Festival so I feel like just walking out of our B&B and then sitting in a van and not trying to be awake and aware while navigating trains is probably going to be better for us.

And yeah Sasha, all things being equal we would have stayed either in Milan or closer, but we extended our trip by one day to catch that particular opera for a theater fan in our party.
