Best way from Messina to Salerno

I have had lots of good, solid advice regarding our upcoming trip to Sicily and continuing to mainland Italy. We will rent a car in Sicily for travel around the islandand will return the car just before we get to Messina. I now need suggestions for the best way to get from Messina to Salerno - train, plane or ferry. Thanks for any help you all can provide.

Don't know about the "best" way, but you can take a direct train from Messina to Salerno, which takes 5:19 to get there, leaving at 10:34 from Messina. That includes the ferry ride with the train cars across the straights of Messina. I took the train (after the Sicily tour) from Catania to Rome, which took 9 hours, but was in hurry and was pretty inexpensive (think I paid $19 euro). Be aware no dining car on that IC train, but you can pick up food and drink before boarding in Messina.

You could also take a 30 minute ferry to Reggio Calabria, then take the train to Salerno. If you can spare the time in Reggio Calabria, the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia is well worth the time to visit, in my opinion. Buon Viaggio!
