We really like Trattoria Montin in Venice. It is located in the Dorsadoro area on a tiny canal. The street to reach it is off the main Zattere/Guidecca street. They have a beautiful garden dining area if you are there in good weather. Great fish, pasta, and Tirimisu.

Your best bet is to ask locals where they eat when they go out. Ask the concierge or your host or a vendor in a store. That's what got us the best and most authentic meals when we were in Italy.

In Venice, not only did the owner of our B&B lead us himself to his favorite sandwich shop (packed with locals only), he even picked up the tab!

Venice is one big tourist trap, I visited this place almost every year but cannot find a good restaurant. however, there is a place that sells the most delicious pizza (papaer thin slices costs only anout 2 Euros, make sure it is formage al funge or cheese and mushroom, these guys do not speak world of English) This little pizzaria is called Piza Volo, located in Campo Santa Margherita in the Dorsoduro district. There is a little wine bar on the east shore of Rio de San Trovaso (the first river west of Academia museum) that sells wonderful little sandwiches for one Euro a piece.
