We are visiting Venice for two nights in late October and will be arriving by train and water taxi. We are looking for accommodations within a short walk to and from a taxi stop and with easy access to Saint Marks and nearby sites. What are the best neighborhoods for us to consider?
A few stairs are not a problem, they just slow me down.
All of the historical center of Venice is flat (the entire province is flat), so the only issue is the many bridges to cross the many canals, all of which will have a few steps up followed by a few steps down on the other side of the canal. The Sestiere (district) of San Marco is the most central and closest to San Marco of course, but Dorsoduro is also near. The vaporetto also requires a little stepping up and down. Buy a vaporetto pass for your entire stay (the are valid from 1 day to multiple days for unlimited rides during the purchased period of validity) as individual rides are about $10 per ride.
Check out Hotel Ala. There’s a vaporetto stop (Giglio) very nearby, with no bridges to cross. You wouldn’t need a water taxi from the train station, just take the Vaporetto. Very central, with tons of shops and restaurants all around. There are two bridges to cross to get to St. Mark’s, or you can take the vaporetto.
