Best travel Itinerary Venice to Rome

What is the best order of our destinations when traveling by train? We fly in to Venice to start our trip- fly back to the United States from Rome.
This is where we plan to visit-
Venice, cinque Terra , Florence , Rome and Naples . Thanks

How much time do you have? CT takes seriously forever to get to from Florence--if you plan on having enough time in Naples, you could visit the Amalfi Coast from there. I've been to both, I'm an avid hiker, and that is what I would do. Venice-Florence-Naples and AC-Rome

How many nights do you have?
What time of year?

End your trip in Rome, obviously

CT takes seriously forever to get to from Florence

I'll gently disagree with that: There's a 7:54 AM train from Firenze Campo di Marte to La Spezia Centrale that takes only 1 hour and 43 minutes, no changes. It's only a short train ride from there to whichever of the 5 CT villages chosen to stay in except Corniglia...which involves a short bus ride up to the village if one has luggage and/or doesn't want to climb a very long, switchback stairway.

There are other rail options from Firenze S.M. Novella to La Spezia that take just over 2 hours to less than 2.5 hours. Most have 1 change but there's a 11:53 option that takes 2.5 hours with no changes. That's not really a long haul IF one isn't trying to do the coast as a day trip.

That said, Venice to the CT is sort of a haul but I think CT to Naples would be worse so I'll vote for Christine's order: Venice >CT >Florence> Naples>Rome.

But knowing the amount of time you have to work with and season you'll be visiting could make a difference. ?????

I'm proposing eliminating CT in favor of the Amalfi Coast, but we need to know more about woodoody's goals for the trip, and of course how much time they have to work with.

Yep, I understand. Just wanted to clarify the time/distance thing as it shouldn't be a barrier IF the OP has their ❤️ set on the CT. They would also be traveling TO instead of FROM Florence if they keep the order suggested so once we have more details - you bet, we need more info! - will look at those schedules.

Tomorrow you can take a train from the Venezia S. Lucia (Venice) station to Milano Centrale and transfer in Milan to get to Monterosso, the town that’s furthest north of the Cinque Terre towns; it will take 6h 30m. From Monterosso you can transfer in Pisa to get to Firenze S. M. Novella (Florence) that takes 2h 30m. From Firenze S. M. Novella it will take 1h 45m to Roma Termini (Rome). This entire route will take 10h 45m.
The fastest way is to take a train from Venezia S. Lucia to Firenze S.M. Novella (2h 15m) and then from Firenze S. M. Novella to the Pisa Centrale station and transfer there to get to Monterosso (2h 30m). From Monterosso you’ll have to change trains at the La Spezia Centrale station to Roma Termini that takes 4h 30m. This direction will take a total of 9h 15m.
Monterosso appears to be the shortest distance compared to the other Cinque Terre towns.

Just to note, there are train combos that travel to Monterosso from Venezia S. Lucia in as little as 5 hours, 21 minutes, two changes.

Woodydooy, as you are very unlikely to, say, travel from Venice>Florence>Pisa>Monterosso>Rome in one day, don't worry about 9-10 hour journey times as you won't be doing anything like that. Let us know what your final itinerary will be and we'll help with suggestions for trains: will be using the Trentialia and Italo websites, depending on itinerary order/destinations (e.g. Italo doesn't serve the CT but competes with Trenitalia for fast-train travel between the larger cities).
