We need help with the best way to travel from Venice to Vernazza. We are not planning to rent a car. I am having trouble determining if a bus or train would be better? We are fine with either one but I am not seeing a direct route and don't know how to piece together the details to evaluate the options? We probably won't leave Venice until late morning. Any details and approx cost are appreciated!

There is no direct route, but it is easy by train. Go to Trenitalia's website and select "Tutti I treni" so you are able to see the Freccia high speed trains as well as the Regionale trains. Enter Venezia S.Lucia and Vernazza, then your date and time. You'll see options routing you thru Milan and Florence. You will change trains in Milan OR Florence as well as La Spezia. If you take the 10:50 from Venice, you'll arrive in Vernazza at 17:34. Prices start at 32.00 euros per person. Buy now for a discount that is very attractive!

Deb, you are going from the east coast of Italy to the west coast. It's 5.0hrs-6.0hrs by train. No trains are direct. In fact, you could change trains 2-3 times before you get to Vernazza. Full base fare is about 65Euro but discount tickets are available on the Freccia and Intercity trains (about 1/2 price). But, these tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged so you have to plan carefully if you want the discounted tickets.
