Best trains from Milan to Venice?

I will be traveling to Italy in mid July this year. I am flying into Milan from New York with my adult daughter. We are taking the train from Milan to Venice. What will be the fastest and most comfortable train to take? Should we book the train prior to our departure from New York?

You have the choice of 2 train lines. Both offer high speed trains to Venice that take about 2 1/2 hrs.

Trenitalia likely has more trains per day. Be sure to select either the Freccia or Eurocity (not Regionale) trains. You have to use the Italian place names - Milano and Venezia (S. Lucia stn)

Italotreno likely has fewer trains, but they're all high speed, and the price may be cheaper.

I would not buy advance tickets if you're going to Venice on the same day you arrive from the States, in case the plane is late and you miss the train. But if you're going the next day, then you can save money with advance purchase. However the discounted tickets are usually nonrefundable and non changeable. They're for a specific date and time.

Cathturtle,

It’s generally not recommended to book your train tickets in advance for your arrival day due to possible unforeseen delays with your plane, passport control, or baggage claim.

You can check train schedules on trenitalia.com to get an idea of how many trains travel that route.

You can buy your tickets once you’ve landed, on your cell phone, or once you arrive to Milano Centrale’s train station.

If you’ll be traveling to other cities, after having visited Venice, you can book those train tickets in advance at considerable savings since you may be able to buy discounted tickets.

Enjoy your trip!
