Best train ride for Alps in March

I work for the Airlines and we would ultimatly like to end our trip in Rome but my husband wants to take a tour of the Italian Alps while there if possible. I am afraid the weather is going to be problematic but because we can hop a flight pretty much anywhere what is your suggestion on the best use of our time and the best place to visit given the time of year?

Anita: Unfortunately, March is a pretty iffy month for traveling in the Dolomites and the Alps. It could be nice, and it could be snowy. It could also be rainy. I've been in the mountains around Innsbruck the first week of April a couple of times, and the countryside was lush and green. Only problem is that they still use natural fertilizers in these places as soon as it thaws. Odors can be a little offensive. If possible, put your trip off to the last of March, and you should be okay. The best ride through the mountains is by car. There's no replacement for having the freedom to go where you wish.

Hi Anita, I don't know of any trains that will give you a tour of the Dolomites. Trains do not run through the Dolomites, but you can get close. You could train to Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck and then catch a bus into the Val Gardena or train to Bolzano and bus to the Val Gardena or elsewhere. What it's like in March? I could get back to you soon, as my nieces are there right now and will be home next week. I agree that a car isprobably the best way to tour the Dolomites. The drives over the Dolomite passes are incredible. Paul
