I’d love some guidance……… we will be staying on Lake Como for a few days and can’t decide which area. My husband has some walking issues, and I know that the area is quite hilly. We love just walking promenade areas-Varenna? Bellagio? Thanks!
Yes, Varenna and Bellagio are great choices for those with mobility issues and have everything you are looking for.
Thank you! Do you feel one of the areas is busier/has more shops and cafes then the other?
Bellagio has more shops and cafes than Varenna. Varenna is quieter, some say more romantic. Both are a must-see. Consider visiting Menaggio too while there. Lovely long, flat promenade on the lake. Easy tourist boat ride from Bellagio or Varenna. I love Lake Como! Have fun!!
I agree with all the above. Varenna is magical in the evening hours. Plus, staying there you can really immerse yourself into being a "local" to a degree. We always include Varenna/Lake Como in our Italy vacations.
Varenna is quieter, Bellagio is more touristy. Depends on which you prefer.
Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio (in increasing order from tiny to small to a bit bigger). All are pretty and well served by the mid lake ferry shuttles. They are across one another therefore less than 5-10 min apart by frequent ferry.
Varenna has the advantage of having the railway station, Menaggio has the advantage of being a short distance by car or bus from Lugano (Switzerland) and its lake, also Menaggio tourist area near the lake is flat. Bellagio has the advantage of…being Bellagio (it is probably the most famous and most visited of the three) therefore more shops, more restaurants, etc. (more tourists too).
Which month of the year do you plan to go?
Hi Roberto- We will be there Beginning of July…. I know it will be hot! Our cruise ends in Venice, and I was thinking my husband and I would head to Lake Como (We’ve never been there)-
I asked because in summer they have nightly free classic music concerts in Menaggio on the main piazza (Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi). They probably halted that during the pandemic but they might have resumed it this year.
Thank you everyone!!
