Best town to stay between Naples and Calabria-Long Term Summer Rental

Hello, I am looking to travel for 1 to 2 months this summer in Italy. I am looking for relatives - one lived outside of Naples and the other in Calabria (don't know the name of the town yet). I am trying to find long term rental for the months of June & July. I've checked out the Amalfi coast towns, but was wondering if there other towns along the coast to consider that also makes travelling north & southbound convenient. I've checked venere.com, but I am finding nightly rates only ($3,000+ monthly), thus putting the trip about out of my league. 1. I am looking for a good town to stay in. 2. looking for a good long-term rental. Is a pool necessary?
3. Does anyone know how to locate a genealogist in Italy that can assist me in finding my family? Is this an expensive process? I will be travelling with my 2 daughters. College Students. Thank you for your time and input.

Your budget seems a little modest for the area, especially if you want a pool. Maybe an apartment in a complex with a shared pool? You are also going at the begining of the peak holiday period. Try this established company to see what's on offer. Take a look at the Cilento, just south of Salerno. http://www.summerinitaly.com/

I agree with Linda. This website has links to numerous homes and villas for rent in the Cilento area: http://www.cilento-travel.com/en.html The area is a popular vacation destination for Italians because it is off the beaten tourist path. The town of Maratea is particularly nice.

Hi, The prices I checked were from vermere.com and Yahoo search results, and they were only the Amalfi Coastal towns because I didn't know of any others to check. I will check the towns and websites that you are mentioning. Thank you. I was asking for those who have already been there during those months, if a pool was necessary b/c it is so hot at that time.

Oh, and the places I was finding for $3,000 a month were for no view, no pool and 1 room w/ 1 double bed.

Look at VRBO.com. One place outside of Salerno and a few in Calabria appeared to be about 1,500 euros a month. As you pointed out, doing a lot of traveling in and out of the Amalfi coast towns would undoubtedly be time-consuming.

On further reflection, I would be tempted to stay in at least two places (one in or closer to Naples; one closer to "your" town in Calabria). My husband and I actually love Naples. I'm dying to stay in VRBO.com/302927! Of course, if you could get a much better rate by staying long-term, that would probably be the way to go. But if not, why not experience a couple of places?

Janet, That is a good idea. I was thinking about that, two locations, but didn't know where to stay. Thank you for suggesting it, it's a better idea. B/c we haven't been to Italy before, we want to see the sights while we are there(Rome, Florence, Paestum, Pompeii) to include as a day trip or a few overnights and were hoping that the train system was nice for that kind of short travel.
As you said the said, the Amalfi Coast seems difficult for continued car travel and not so easy. That was why I don't mind being outside of the Amalfi Coast. I will check the website that you mentioned, b/c as I mentioned, it is myself and adult duaghters travelling together, so we need more than 1 room with a double bed. If you think of anything else, please let me know. Also, would it be worth it for us to get train passes?

I was hoping to not have to rent a car & just use train travel. The reason we are trying to stay in a town where everything is walking distance. I've had some great suggestions so far.
Any thoughts on if I need to rent a car, or will the train and occasional taxi/bus work out fine for us?

I have been traveling in Calabria since 1980 and found my family there. Now we generally travel to Calabria every year or two depending on our Italy itinerary. We stay at the Hotel Savant in Nicastro in Lamezia Terme, but we only stay for one week. There has been considerable condo construction along the coast, particularly in Gizzeria Lido, Pizzo, and Tropea. I do not know if there is more construction south of Tropea because we do not go any farther south. I have been to Reggio Calabria several times, but not since 2000. You might want to post on Frommer's Italy Forum because people sometimes inquire about this area, as well. Calabria is off of the tourist track with Americans, but the area has always attracted northern Europeans because of the beaches. Additionally, the area has attracted the British in increasing numbers due to the strength of the pound against the euro and it is only a four hour flight away. Lamezia Terme has an international airport, which accommodates direct flights from Toronto during the summer. Speaking Italian is more than helpful, because almost no one speaks English. Buon viaggio,

I agree with staying in 2 places. For the Naples portion of your trip, I would look at renting an apartment in Salerno. Close to Naples and great train connections.

We have been to Italy ten times and have rented a car only once - to get to some places that weren't well-served by trains or buses. That said, Calabria is another story. You may very well need a car to get to the places where your family is/was. Getting information on buses in Italy is challenging; it's somewhat better once you're there, but still not easy. And, as someone suggested, you'll need some Italian to be successful.

I found where my Calabrese family is located/or at least the town they left from to come to America: Cosenza. It is in the Northern Calabria region. The other side of the family resided in a town East of Naples: Greci. Have you had good experiences using VRBO? It seems like the most cost effective & convenient way to stay long term. I've been trying to fly into Salerno, but am having trouble finding airlines that fly into Salerno - will we have to fly into Italy first through Naples or Rome, then catch an Italian air flight onto Salerno?
Which is better/eaiser to fly into Naples or Rome? Or, is it easier to take a bus, train or taxi there from the airport? Thank you!

We definitely want to stay along the coastline, as I mentioned before, it doesn't have to be the Amalfi coast. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other coastal towns I could check in to North of Salerno that still make for easy transportation in and out of town- Between Naples and Salerno? Would it be a good idea to also consider coastal cities between Rome & Naples?
