We will be travelling from Sesto in the Eastern Dolomites to Venice. We will have a rental car to leave Sesto but want to work out the best town to drop off the car near Venice. We want to keep the trip time as short as possible and also want to avoid driving in larger cities. So we were wondering whether to drop off in Verona and catch the train to Venice.
Verona isn't particularly smaller and easier to drive in than Venice landside district, Mestre.
I'd drop at Piazzale Roma, in Venice: all you have to do is driving on a straight causeway slower than 55 kms per hour (there are 2 speed traps and the limit Is 50).
If you really want to waste One hour on a train, Padua would be the closest Town to Venice with tons of local trains each day. Of course There is a ZTL in Padua, Just like in Verona and in every Italian settlement with an historic centre.
Dario’s recom sounds like the answer to me.
Returning the car at Piazzale Roma was easy in my experience. As Dario said, there is only one road across the causeway. Then the car rental lot is right there. (Check the map for your rental car company in advance). Afterwards, a quick walk to the vaporetto stops.
Thanks everyone. Most helpful.
