Best tours of Venice

We have three full days in Venice and intending to go out to the islands on one, generally explore on another by getting out there and just meandering. Would like to do a night tour and a walking tour. What have been the experiences of fellow travellers and what recommendations can be made?

Like Rick says, "Get lost". That's exactly what we did the past 2 times we were there. We just walked and walked and explored and had the best time. At night you can see in some of the window and see the decor. Awesome! You really can't get too lost. It's not that big and it is an island. We always felt safe, too. I hope it still is. We are going back again in April. Also, make sure to go to Burano. I am going back to Venice just to have lunch in Burano. The fresh fish is amazing. And I am not a fish eater.

I didn't take a tour, just walked around.

One "must see" for you is the inside of St. Mark's Cathedral when the lights are on (ask for times, usually around mass). It is an amazing site that is totally lost when it's dark.

If you're Catholic, attending a mass would be a great idea. We aren't but a great souvenir for my Catholic Mother-in-law was a Venetian glass rosary, very inexpensive in the Cathedral museum shop.

Don't worry about a "tour". Just get RS guidebook and walk. Look into a vaporetta pass for the three days as it will come in handy when you get tired and it will also get you out to the islands. Felt very safe at all times - even at night. Just be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas and wear your money belt.

I was in Venice last year and did a walking tour and highly recommend it. It was a good way to get an overview and the history of Venice. I did the tour on the first day and then wandered the streets with a good map for the rest of my visit.

I also did the self guided audio tour of the Doges Palace which I found really good too and would recommend. They will ask for id to hire the audio guide, I never leave my passport but they did accept my credit card using my license to prove who I was.

Do get a 3 day vaporetto pass, not only is it good value, but one of the best trips is up and down the Grand Canal at different times of the day.

The lights go on in the Bascillica around midday or 12.30, can't remember exactly, but it is worth seeing.

Do have a drink at an outside table at Cafe Florian in San Marcos Square. It was Casanova's hangout and they have a 4 piece band late afternoon. Great experience.

Have fun and the exchange rate isn't bad but Venice is still expensive.
