best to fly to Naples or Rome for trip to Sorrento

Hi,

My teenage son and I are planning a trip in April to Amalfi-probably staying in Sorrento for a week. We have relatives in Naples who will be driving up to see us in Amafi. Is it better to fly into Naples and get to Amalfi somehow, or to fly into Rome and stay a couple of days there, and go to Sorrento from there ? We will be coming from either Philadelphia or NY City-JFK on an overnight flight. My son has some issues, so easiest is best.
Thank you!

Flights to/from Naples will involve a stop each way. Flights from JFK or Newark to Rome are non-stop, and will probably be much cheaper than Philadelphia - Rome.

When we went to Sorrento, we flew into and out of Rome and took the train to Naples. Then, we rode the Circumvesuviana commuter train from the Naples train station to Sorrento.

If you want to stop in Rome, or if Rome is appreciably cheaper, go with Rome.
For the easiest, fly to Naples.
Check the bus schedule direct from Naples airport--that is the easiest way, short of paying a private driver. Otherwise, you must go to Naples train station to transfer.

I've done both. I defiantly prefer flying into Naples. One connecting flight, one bus ride. This is the bus that has a direct connection to Sorrento. 1 hr15m. €10.

Only you know how your son may react, if he needs a break after the flight, pick Rome. You will however have to either taxi or take the Leonardo Express train into Rome.

If you fly round-trip to Rome, you'll need to return to Rome and stay there the night before your flight home. Perhaps those who've flown into Naples can comment on the logistics of getting to Naples airport from Sorrento for a morning connecting flight.

RE: gerri's link to the Curreri Viaggi bus from Sorrento station to Naples airport, we used that last year, leaving Sorrento at 8:30 AM. Hit a lot of traffic on the way, but got to the airport entrance around 10:15, plenty of time for a 12:30 outbound flight. I probably wouldn't chance using it for an earlier flight than that.

One thing to note relating to Jays suggestion for the Curreri Viaggi bus schedule.

Only Alitalia/Delta partner and Lufthansa/United
partner with international flights. Fly out after 11:00. With connections in Rome or Frankfurt/Munich.

Correctamundo, gerri. On that 12:30 flight, we flew Lufthansa Naples to Munich (duty-free chocolate!), then on to Chicago--10 hours, argh!
