My wife and I are planning to spend our final night in Italy in Positano in early October. I would like to drive the Almafi Coast road, though am nervous after reading reports. Would Sat afternoon (after 3) in October be a less insane time to attempt the drive? I had read that most tour buses are done by early afternoon. Wishful thinking? Also would early Sunday AM (8am) be an ok time to leave Positano for return trip? Or would the traffic be crazy that early? Thanks,
Rich
My guess is that you won't have any problem. We were there in mid-September a couple of years ago and the traffic wasn't anything like what people mention it is during the summer. October should be fine. But maybe someone with some more recent experience will pipe up!
Rich, This may make you trip a little easier. Start you drive in Salerno as early as you like on sat. You would be going against the flow, traffic will not be very busy, but it's much more enjoyable. Have done this in May and will be doing it again in mid October. Then continue in the same diretion on sun.

That is a good time to drive there, indeed: the summer crowds are gone, the autumn showers are unlikely to make an early arrival. Starting the trip by the Salerno end is indeed an interesting tip. So is departing early in the morning, before the hordes leave their hotels and annoying buses get on the road.
