best time for fall visit to Florence and Venice?

I'll be going in Sept/Oct of next year and want to pin down the dates soon. I'll by flying into Milan, spending much time in Florence, and leaving from Venice, with some day trips in between. Hate really hot weather. Rain or cold is easier to deal with. What would be the best time between early Sept and late Oct?

From everyone that I know that has ever been, mid October is the best. We are going this year Oct. 12th!!

The later the better in October- crowds drop off a lot and the weather is still very mild.

looked into this myself, and mid October is the most suggested, we are heading there for our honeymoon from October 13-26.

Wow! We're leaving October 12th also, returning on the 27th. I was concerned about October being rainy but it sounds like it will be fabulous. I agree that rain is easier to deal with than the heat. Kathy

We're also going to be in Italy this October. From the end of Sept. to the middle of October or until we start yearning for the mountains of Austria. Who knows, maybe we'll all bump into each other as we're holding our Rick Steves' guides in our hands! With all of us there, it could start getting crowded (ha, ha)!

I've visited Florence several times in September and daytime temperatures are often warm to hot, even at the end of the month. If you want cooler temperatures, October would be the better month for your visit.

I vote for early October...our last visit to Venice in Mid Oct included a very high tide and the associated flooding...water up about 14 to 16 inches in Piazza San Marco and all passageways between San Marco and the Rialto bridge were flooded. The elevated pathways were in place...but we still got wet getting to and from the pathways.
