Best suggestions for staying in Positano ??

Going to see the Amalfi Coast & was hoping to stay in Positano but wow - the prices are so much higher than everywhere else we’re staying in Italy.
We’ve been booking Airbnb’s for my husband myself & our 2 18 yr old daughters.

Any great suggestions - hotel or bnb that I’m just not finding on my searches??

I’m not opposed to staying somewhere else locally, we just really wanted that gorgeous view!

Thanks

  • note ... this is the furthest south we want to go, headed up to Rome from here.

If you do go just a little farther south you can save a lot. We recently stayed in Salerno. There are many hotels near the train station in Salerno which will get you to Rome easily. We took the ferry to Amalfi one day and tp Positano in another day. We stayed at a Rick Steves recommended hotel and had a 15 minute walk to the ferry and a 15 minute walk to the train station. Salerno is very quaint and walkable with excellent restaurants. The views of the towns along the Amalfi Coast from the ferry was incredible.

Have you checked Praiano? It may be alittle less then Positano.

You might need to spend a few more bucks but in the scheme of things it would be so worth it. We stayed in Positano this last trip---loved it and we did pay abit more but it was stunning.

When comparing lodging costs between say Positano/Praiano and Salerno, but sure to consider transportation costs to and from the less expensive lodgings. When those costs are added, you might not be saving nearly as much as it initially appears and you'll likely be adding daily travel time to and from the places you want to visit. I've stayed in Positano and thought it was worth the splurge, both for the relaxation and the convenience.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I assumed the ferry would be cheaper but just looked at the price and with four of us I definitely do need to factor in the cost of us staying somewhere that seems to be a cheaper way to see Positano ... maybe not so much cheaper in the long run

I disagree with staying in Salerno, it is nothing like Positano. However, Amalfi town, Capri and Ravello are in my mind good alternative (yes, even with getting in and out of Ravello because of those fantastic out of this world views).

But honestly, stay in Positano. This is the town that you chose, I am assuming for good reasons: it is postcard perfect, it is small, it is probably a place you have though about for a while.

I have been in Positano four times. Last time I chose Alcione Residence because of how spacious the apartment was and the view on the sea. It was also in my budget since it was off season.

Walking in, I could hear the waves crashing and the balcony had the iconic view of Positano. It had a bedroom, a small kitchen, a washing machine, a living room with a dinning room table. Breakfast is included and the management brings it to you in the morning. Next door to the Alcione Residence was Le Sireneuse. Shortly after checking in, we went for a late lunch at Le Sireneuse. The views were the same as our apartment but the grounds were beautiful and the service impeccable. The sun came and once again, it was as if it was a nice summer day without the crowds because we were there in October.

I also disagree with staying in Salerno. It’s a city and is not the Amalfi Coast. As I have said before, you’re going to all of the trouble of going to the Amalfi Coast to see the Amalfi Coast. Stay on the Amalfi Coast. You won’t regret it.

We usually stay in Ravello at Punta Civita or Villa San Cosma. Fantastic prices and ridiculous views. Check for B&B’s instead of hotels. Also look at Atrani and Amalfi town. Maiori is also a fantastic option.

I have not slept in Positano, but I would want to know how many stairs to the beach or to the bus/car service/taxi road. Positano is a special destination and pricing should not be compared with urban locations or mass tourism beach resorts. You should also not plan to fly home from Rome the same day you check out of Positano.
