Just returned from Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre. Great Trip! Going back in four weeks on business and I have 5 extra days in Italy, leaving from Rome.
Any suggestions for the must see places from your point of view? Not a big tour fan; going solo. Thanks-Chris
Pompeii is among the most amazing places I have ever been. We stayed in Sorrento and visited both Pompeii and Herculaneum. Fascinating.
Any specific advise outside the usual RS guide book info? Which hotel? I am going by train, not car. Thanks
Orvieto is a short train ride from Rome and one of the great hilltowns. A magnificent cathedral, terrific Etruscan museum, wonderful views from the walls and interesting streets to wander up and down. Also, about the best Gelato we had in Italy at the shop across the Piazza to the left of the Cathedral.
In Sorrento we stayed at a small hotel called Mignon Meuble, and it was reasonable, comfortable and convenient to everything. About 90 euros a night for 2 (including breakfast and free interent on their computers) in Sept '08. Very centrally located and no more than 10 minute or so walk to train station and the Circumv' to Pompeii/Herc. Also extensive bus and boat access to the Amalfi coast (tho not sure of schedules for your time frame).
