best small-group tour companies in Rome/ Florence?

Hello, while we are planning to do many activities on our own, there are some attractions that we're looking into booking space with a small-group tour (Colosseum underground, early morning Sistene chapel, possibly catacombs and also organized day trips from Florence). Wondering if there are any specific tour companies that people like? Have looked at both Walks of Italy and The Roman Guy, both sound good...are there any others? I'd appreciate any recommendations or advice. Trip is planned for September.

thank you!

Used Walks of Italy for several tours in Venice, Florence and Rome. Only one tour had 12 people. All the others around 7 - 8. Guides were very knowledgeable. Would not hesitate to book with them again.

All the guides for these companies are freelance, so one day someone works for one company and the next day for the other. All guides in Italy are trained, certified, and licensed.

Walks of Italy are good, but we really like Context Tours which tops out at 6 participants. However Context tends to be intellectually heavy. Expect to feel like you are taking a tour in a 400 level college course. Also they tend to be very theme specific. If that appeals, great, if not use someone else. We have used them in Rome, Florence, and Prague and been pleased every time. We are signed up for Venice this Fall and I'm debating Florence again.

We have used Through Eternity Tours in both Rome and Florence. The tour size is small--12-15 people . In Florence we were the only 2 in our group so we essentially got a private tour!

I've used European Odyssey on three different trips when in Rome. I find their tours to be a good value, guides are very knowledgeable, and easily tailor the message to a variety of guests, meaning from general information about the site visited to indepth detail.

I loved Walks of Italy and would use them again. The guides are very good and as another poster noted, there are often fewer than 12 people. Their office staff are also excellent and available. When I realized I would miss a tour because my taxi failed to appear on time in Rome, I called and they instantly rescheduled me for a later group.

I just returned from Italy. We booked tours through The Roman Guy and they were both fabulous. Elaine led the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Form tour, and Raffa led the Vatican tour. Both were incredibly knowledgable, charming and personable. There was nothing they couldn't answer. I can't image seeing either of those sites with a tour guide.

We used Walks of Italy last May for our Vatican tour in Rome. We really enjoyed the tour and we had a small group, can't remember how many. Would use them again.

Here's another vote for Walks of Italy. I didn't appreciate how much difference small groups and knowledgeable guides made unti we took a Viking river cruise 6 months after going to Tuscany. The VRC guides ranged from adequate to annoying.

Walks of Italy is also very well organized.

We took 2 tours with Walks of Italy and both were excellent. It was in March, so a less busy time. One tour had only us and another couple. We were the only ones on our Pristine Sistine tour, so we got a private tour for a group price!

What was the price range for the Rome tours with some of the tours above mentioned?

Check their websites. For the tours that interest you. We did a combined tour of Florence through Walks of Italy that included tickets to the Academie and the Uffizi. It was all day and ran about $110 per person.

You can book online. They send you a confirmation email with everything you need, including a map and detailed directions to the meeting place.
