Best site to estimate Rome taxi costs?

Hello,

I'm trying to get a close estimate of taxi costs for my time in Rome. I've looked at different sites: Rome2Rio, FreeNow, Taxi Fare Calculator.... On Google Maps it looks like there's a taxi rank about 1 minute from my lodging. Mostly, I would be getting a taxi from my lodging in the morning to get to my furthest attraction of that day and then walk my way back to my lodging during the day.

Is there a best most accurate site I can use or are any of the above fine?

Thanks :)

Any of the above are ok except Rome2rio
That’s a fun tool but don’t count on it for accuracy

If you tell us the location of your lodging and where you want to go we can probably tell you what taxi fare to expect
We’ve never had more than a 15 euro ride in the center
Most are about 10 euros

Just returned from Rome. We found taking a taxi from the taxi stand to be much cheaper than using Freenow or Uber.

I would suggest this is fairly impossible, there are too many variables

I can only tell you we took taxis from Lago Argentina to each of our furthest points - Roma Termini, Giardino degli Aranci, up on hill by Borghese Museum, and out to Museum of the Walls, the furthest destination, & none of them were more than 6-9 Euros. I recall tipping the nice drivers a few Euros (sorry, but I enjoy practicing Italian and tip for their generosity in giving me some insights into Rome.)

We recently returned from Rome. Most fares were €7 to €10. We had no problems at all with drivers. However we were chatting at breakfast one day with a couple staying at our hotel. They had gotten lost and were running late the day before and hurriedly got into a taxi not thinking to check the meter (you can see it at the bottom of the driver’s rear view mirror) and ended up getting charged €30 for a short ride!

Thanks so much for all of the replies. My lodging is a 1 minute walk from the Stazione Taxi San Pietro.

Another site I found while searching for a fare calculator is: https://www.worldtaximeter.com/rome

Destinations from my lodging that I'm looking for taxi estimates include: Non-Catholic Cemetery , Colosseum, Catacombs of Priscilla, Basilica of Saint Pudentiana , Basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati , and Termini.

ChristineH,

Would you have any guesses on costs from the taxi stand location to the various destinations I've listed?

We just returned from Rome and got swindled by the official taxi company from airport. I scratched his (plastic) rear bumper and he kept joking about how he was going to charge us 100€ instead of the posted 50€. We took it as a threat, despite being a friendly threat. We also got swindled by Uber one night (we got caught in the rain and waited for a cab for 20min) which only posted the 50€ surcharge I’ve the 30€ ride. At least that’s all I saw, and I take Uber in the US all the time.

Did you actually have to pay the 100 euros he was joking about?
If not you were not “swindled”

Uber as we know it does not exist in Italy
If what you took was actually “ Uber” it operates like a high priced limo service in Italy

If you use Freenow, you are reserving a taxi that incurs an additional charge, but you should know what the cost will be. (Though there have been reports of drivers circumventing the "estimated fare"). Cheapest would be going to a taxi rank, but then, again, depending on the conduct of the driver. FreeNow might give you a reasonable expectation of what the fare would be, figure the same or less for a taxi at the rank. Of course even FreeNow is a bit time sensitive, meaning what your fare a month or more from now will be is not certain.

Estimates are tough because time of day matters when using apps (depends on demand). I just returned from Rome and used the Uber app often. Although Uber is not the same in Italy as it is in the US, it's not terribly different. One thing I like about using the Uber app is Rome is that it gives you options to book vans, cars, and taxis.

One aspect of Rome's taxi pricing is that the meter starts from the moment the taxi is called. So if your hotel calls a taxi for you, most likely it will show up with a couple of Euro on the meter. That is not a scam. And you cannot flag a cab on the street like you do in New York city. You have to find the taxi stand.

Joby-

I just Google mapped all of your locations. They are all about 6-7 km from your taxi stand.
A few are in the same vicinity-
Basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati and Colosseum
Basilica of Saint Pudentiana and Termini

Catacombs of Priscilla (furthest away) and Non Catholic Cemetery are the 2 outliers.

I believe they are all within the 8-10 euro range.
Catacombs of Priscilla maybe 15 euros.
If you want to budget as closely as you can I would just say 12 euros for each ride.

That's what I would do.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I'm trying to keep my costs down, but think a taxi sometimes might be the better option.

If you want to keep the costs down and you are 1 min from the San Pietro train station, that is the end of the line of bus 64, and that bus can take you to a lot of places for 1.50€, including within walking distance of all the locations you listed except for the Catacombs of Priscilla, which you could reach with bus 92 or 310 from Termini, after you get to Termini with no. 64.

Roberto,

A small correction--I'm 1 minute form Stazione Taxi San Pietro NOT train station. From train stations I'm 16 minutes walk from Lepanto metro station.

The cost of train and bus is much more economical, but I also have a very busy itinerary and need to maximize time and simplicity. I'd much rather take bus/train if I could though.
