Best Sicily volcano to climb?

We are wondering about the differences in climbing Etna vs. Stromboli (understanding that it's weather and mountain dependent).

It sounds like Stromboli is more active, which seems to make it more likely you can't climb it but if you could, it's very cool. It looks like it's pretty packed--does that take away some of the enjoyment?

Etna of course is easier logistically--and it appears fewer people attempt the summit.

If you only had time to do one, which would it be and why?

Thanks much!

Mt Etna is actually on the island of Sicily. Stromboli is on the Aeolian island of Stromboli.

Haven't yet been to Etna but will be going to Sicily on the RS Tour in November and I am planning extra days after so we can go to the summit of Etna. I expect it to be similar to Vesuvius as it is not currently erupting. And in that you can get most of the way up by vehicle. Really hoping for good weather.

We hiked Stromboli a few years ago and it was possibly the most spectacular experience I have had while traveling.
It's a steep hike on a switchback trail but I would have done it again the next day no question. You get to sit at the top of the mountain in the dark, hear the explosions and watch lava shoot into the sky, then feel the ash rain down on you!
You must go with a guide and there is a group size limit. I didn't feel it was crowded when we were there in the fall.
You can view the eruptions from a distance at a cafe on the side of the mountain if you aren't up to the hike and also from the water on a boat tour.

We were traveling by sailboat but I know you can get a ferry to Stromboli.

Highly recommended by this volcano geek ;D

I saw Stromboli's volcano from my hotel room terrace in Lipari and took the ferry to the island the next day.

Stromboli wins, not even close.
I did all 3, Etna, stromboli and Vulcano.
Climbing the Stromboli, feeling the ground, hearing the growl, smelling, watching the explosions, it is not comparable.
Best holiday experience I've ever had.
It's unique.
