Best scenic driving route from Rome to Amalfi Coast

Hello!

I am leaving next week for Italy and am wondering the best driving route from Rome Airport to Vietri Sul Mare/Salerno. The most direct route appears to be the A1 to A3 autostrade. I am wondering about a more scenic route along the Western coast through Naples and on to the Amalfi coast before heading to our hotel in Vietri Sul Mare. Has anyone done this and recommend it? It takes twice as long, and I'm not sure what there is to see along the way. But it may be more fun to "roadtrip" down the coast from Rome rather than just taking a non-scenic highway?

Note: we already have rented a car.

Thanks for any tips you can provide!

In the "Greater Naples Metropolitan Area," e.g. around Ercolano and Pompeii, I don't recommend getting off the autostrada, due to dense traffic on smaller roads. North of Naples might not be as bad.

You will have plenty of scenic drive on the Amalfi Coadt, I would not double the travel time. And some areas can get very congested.
