In mid-September, is it best to: - take train to Milan, then train to Como, then bus to Tremezzo - take train to Milan, then train to Como, then boat to Tremezzo - take train to Milan, then train to Varenna, then boat to Tremezzo - rent a car and drive - other options?
Also need to return to Venice three days later for cruise leaving in late afternoon on the same day. Need best route to ensure we arrive for the cruise on time. Thank you for your assistance!

For Venice to Varenna-Esino and then the ferry to Tremezzo, it's about 4hrs33min by train to Varenna-Esino. Then, you walk to the ferry and then its a 40-minute ferry ride to Tremezzo. You're looking at about 6.0-6.5hrs overall depending on the ferry schedule. For Venice to Como S. Giovanni and then the ferry to Tremezzo, its the same amount of time on the train unless you can go mid-day when a couple of runs are 30 minutes faster. The ferry from Como to Tremezzo will take the same amount of time. I don't know anything about the bus. It doesn't look like there's a "best" route. I would just suggest making sure that you can depart Tremezzo early enough to get to the cruise ship dock.
