Best route to Annecy from Rome?

Hi everyone: I’m looking for your advice! I’m considering the My Way Italy tour next June, and then adding some solo time in Annecy (2 -3 nights to include R&R?) and Paris, France. The tour ends in Rome on Friday, and I’ll add a night so I’d be departing Rome on a Saturday. I am a solo female traveler, and new to Italy. I’ve traveled by train in France.
Question is how to travel onward to Annecy from Rome:
Fly to Geneva (possibly stay overnight) and one hour bus to Annecy?
Fly to Lyon (possibly stay overnight) and two hour bus or train to Annecy?
Train to Milan or Turin, stay overnight, then onward via train to Annecy?

I’d have to buy train tickets from two different agencies for France/Italy portions, i believe? My concern would be if a train was late, then its a domino affect for connections, esp given the limited connections to Annecy. Do I buy tickets with longer connection times just to be safe? I wouldn’t mind an overnight along the way, as long as I could stay near the station.

Hotels may be slightly lower cost (?) if arriving on a Sunday in Annecy, and possibly slightly less crowded for Mon/Tues versus arriving Saturday. But summer time is probably crowded most days. I would not mind the ‘down time’ on the train after an active tour, but it would be more straightforward to fly to Geneva? I’m open to your thoughts or advice on which route to take, or your experience in similar decisions.... Thanks everyone!

I would just take the short inexpensive flight operated by Easy Jet airline to Geneva and then the bus .

You don't want to be on a series of trains for 9 hours
It depends on where you want to go on the way to Annecy

Thanks Jazz+Travels: I agree, that is the most straight-forward idea after moving around so much in Italy. 9 hours on trains would NOT be ideal in the summer if avoidable. I’ll look into EasyJet.
It will be interesting to compare Venice and “Venice” of France as Annecy has been described. I’m betting its apples and oranges :)
