My 27 y.o. daughter and I (first time to Italy) will be traveling throughout Italy for 17 days in August. We fly into Rome and then want to go straight to Venice for 2 nights, then to Vernazza for 2 nights, then to Sienna for 3 nights, then to Sorrento for 6 nights, and lastly back to Rome for two nights and then fly home out of Rome.
My question is what is the best plan to get from place to place, we were thinking of booking a plan to Venice and then trains everywhere else, is that practical?
Do you have to fly into and out of Rome? You might want to consider an "open jaw" flight, flying into Venice and out of Rome. Then, as to how to get around, you could either rent a car (when you leave Venice and drop off when you arrive in Rome) or take a train.
I think that that decision largely depends upon how much exploring you want to do between your stops. We have opted for a rental car. Our trip is somewhat similar to yours, but we're renting our car when we leave Rome and dropping it off when we arrive in Venice.
The Rome to Venice train takes 4.5hrs. It's probably faster than going out to Fiumicino, going through security, flying to Venice and then taking transportation into Venice. It's probably cheaper too when you consider 11Euro on the Leonardo Express and 6Euro from Marco Polo on top of your airfare. It will take about 6.5hrs.-7.5hrs to get to Vernazza from Venice.
As a thought, Sorrento is very beautiful but I would suggest considering adding a night onto Venice and one on to Rome and dropping Sorrento to 4 nights.
Thanks for your replys. I really appreciate your advice. Unfortunately, we do have to fly in and out of Rome. Do to our short time, we want to get to each place in the least amount of time, therefore would it be more cost effective to rent a car or take the train. Also, if the train, should I buy point to point tickets, and should I buy them in advance?
Also, in regard to adjusting time down from 6 days to 4 days in Sorrento, will that give us enough time to explore Capri, pompeii, naples and the Amalfi Coast?
Cyndie: Answering your last question, yes 4 days in Sorrento will give you enough time to do that, and my advice is exactly the same as Larry's: add a day to Venice and a day to Rome by reducing Sorrento from six days to four days. After you're there, I think you'll be glad you did that.
