Best route from States to Pisa?

Hello,
I live in the States and need to travel to Pisa for work. I usually try to have one flight to/in EU as I would rather be delayed in the States vs overseas. Having said this, what would be the best route:

  1. Flight one, RDU (Raleigh-Durham) to ATL (Atlanta). 2nd ATL to MXP (Malpensa) and then drive to Pisa. ~3.5hr

  2. Flight one from RDU CDG (Paris), then 2nd to FLR (Florence).and then drive to Pisa ~1 hr

I'll be traveling with too much luggage to do the train; I'm traveling solo.

Thank you for the advice.

I would search for flights that enable you to fly from a European hub airport directly to Pisa. I’ve never flown to Pisa, but I know it’s a fairly small airport, likely with limited carriers (e.g., RyanAir or EasyJet) and/or flight options. That said, if you can find the right flight combinations that enable you to land in Pisa, that would make life much easier after a transatlantic flight.

I would not recommend a 3.5 hour drive from MXP to Pisa immediately after your MXP arrival. If you are determined to drive after your flight, driving from FLR to Pisa would be the better option.

A quick look I only see KLM and Delta flying that route into Pisa as a single ticket both via Amsterdam.

British Airways flies directly into Pisa some days from LHR which could get you directly there as well, but if it's two different carriers you'd need to collect your luggage and go back through security again. That sounds like a non-starter if luggage is a concern.

Of your two options Florence is much closer and you could probably even arrange a car service with sufficient space for your luggage with relative ease. Arranging the same from Milan would probably be a struggle as it's 3+ hours by car.

If you're thinking of renting a car and driving yourself my advice would still be Florence, but driving from Milan I would guess it might be your only option.

If you can get into Pisa the airport is very, very close to the city so transfer shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck,

If you can get to Pisa airport then that would be the best option, I've flown from Heathrow on British Airways and walked to the town centre from the airport it's that close so if Atlanta/LHR/Pisa is an option then that would be my choice.

We fly into Pisa often and we try to do the KLM/Delta route via Amsterdam previously mentioned. We've found Amsterdam is the most efficient transfer spot, CDG would be our next choice.

What is your home airport?
Do this:
Go to Kayak or Google Flights
Enter
from YOUR HOME AIRPORT
To PSA
click on the box to include nearby airports so you will get results to nearby airports, certainly Florence (FLR), chi h is only 50 miles away from Pisa.
Pisa airport has more flights than Florence, but both airports are managed by the same company (Toscana Aeroporti) which has decided to have Pisa specialize mostly on low cost airlines like RyanAir or EasyJet, while Florence, which can handle few flights, specializes on traditional airlines, like AirFrance, ITA, Lufthansa, KLM, Iberia, and their affiliates. If you can find a flight to PSA that would be best, but otherwise from the US with a traditional airline you might have more options to FLR.
From Florence to Pisa you can take trains, buses, automobiles. If you need a rental car during your stay, then rent it at the airport where you land, if you don’t, use public transportation.
I’m sure there would be more options to fly to Rome Fiumicino (FCO), Italy’s largest airport, however unless the flight is hugely cheaper, I would probably choose Pisa or Florence, and save yourself time since you need at least 3.5 hours from Rome to Pisa, whether you go by train or car. Milan is too far (about 5 hours from Pisa), I wouldn’t fly there.

Would you mind telling us what airport you are starting from?

You could do an AA/BA codeshare from the US to Pisa with a change of planes at London Heathrow.

It would be better to fly into Pisa which happens to be a bigger airport than Florence.

We fly into Pisa from Boston. We try to leave the US late and change planes nearest Pisa for the best night's sleep. Munich makes for an easy change, as does Zurich. As Frank II said Pisa airport is better than Florence as it was used as a base for both the Italian and US Air Force. It also has a bigger and easier car rental area.

Based on your criteria of just one stop, the flight through CDG would be the better choice.

However, the easier routing would be KLM/Delta through AMS directly to Pisa. It's an extra stop, but you end up in Pisa - less hassle to change planes in AMS than renting a car in Florence.

When is this? I am seeing only one-stop through LHR in November, but through FRA in April.

Can you get a direct flight to London? From there you can hop over to Pisa
