What are some of the best resturants in Rome to eat at ???? NON-Tourist traps
Very difficult question is answer. Best is a relative term. What is best for me is may not be best for you. Lots of great restaurants in Rome. We have eaten at Target the most. Is it the absolute best == probably not, but we like it.
Agree completely that it is totally subjective. My advice though is definitely to find a restaurant off some side alley near a big sight packed with locals because those are likely to be less expensive and better than the more touristy places. Still, I haven't spent near enough time in Rome to know what are absolutely THE BEST places.
There were several places we enjoyed. One that stood out for us was our lunch at a restaurant that is right next to the Albergo Ottocento which is at Via dei Cappucini 19. I think the restaurant is Via dei Cappucini 17. I had a seafood risotto that was wonderful, and came in a one-person portion. The house wine was a bottle from Montelpulciano. I just can't remember the name of the place though.
Patrick,
My son & I both thought Il Gabriello was Great, one of the best meals I've had in several trips to Europe.
Found it in the Rick Steve's Guide & have read several Very Positive posts

My favorite was near the Pantheon called Miscellanea. We liked it so much we went back the next day also. They serve all day and dont close at 3PM.Excellent service and 5 special pasta dishes at noon.
Rick's recommended Irish Pub had excellent prices, huge servings, great service and excellent food. Oh, they serve Italian food.
Here is another vote for Il Gabriello. We ate there last month and it was a great meal. We arrived at 7 pm when it opens without a reservation but they gave us a table. It is located on a tiny street that runs between Via Corso and Spanish Steps. The building is very old and you go down some steps to the dining area. We also liked Ditirambo near Camp Fiori. I will have to add that we ate at the Irish pub place several years ago and it was definitely not a good meal. No point in eating that type of food when great Italian food is readily available.
Found this place on my first full day in Rome. Had just spent the day exploring and after seeing the Victor Emmanuel Monument started walking back to my hotel. Turned down an alley and there this place was. Sat outdoors and to this day remember the shrimp and apple salad. Pricey but memorable. Then as others have stated it is all about personal taste.

Oops. Sorry.
I always stay at the Alimandi Vaticano while in Rome because I love the neighborhood around the Vatican. After several trips to Rome, I've found the food hit or miss (and very expensive), so last time ate two nights in a row at Piacere Molise via candia 60: phone 063943553, because we had always loved it and continue to love it! No Americans there -- they're not speedy waiting on you, and speak little English, but OH, the Food! Also very reasonable, and all home-made pastas If go to the Vatican, end your day there and you won't be disppointed! Donna L., Roswell GA
Hosteria Romana! It's in RS's book. yummy.
If you want really good brick oven pizza the restaurant will post a sign on the door or window which will say "fornio rustica," [sp?] otherwise it's made in a typcial oven. There's a difference.
