If you had a few hours late morning to early afternoon to wander in Rome, what would you suggest? Thinking small alleys/streets to stroll through, restaurants or shops (not looking for high-end shopping) to check out. We have limited time in Rome and will check out the Colosseum and Forum one day. We'll go to St. Peter's Basilica but aren't sure if the Vatican museums would just be overwhelming/frustrating with the crowds and if we should opt to stroll around somewhere else in Rome. Suggestions?
Trastevere.
Download Rick Steves app and take his Rome > Trastevere self-guided walking tour.
Trastevere
And cross the river into Jewish Ghetto
Trastevere. Grab a couple of trapizzini for lunch at Trapizzino Trastevere, just across Ponte Sisto and behind Fontana di Ponte Sisto.
Oh yes!
Trapizzino!
Since you limited time, do a walk by some of the more iconic locations that you may otherwise not see... start at Castel Sant'Angelo, then St. Angelo Bridge, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna, Trevi Fountain, Monument to Victor Emmanuel, Campidoglio and back to the Pantheon for a drink in the piazza. Along the way you'll walk by many beautiful churches with great art that you can pop into if you like great art in beautiful churches.
We stayed near the Campo dei Fiori and loved it. It was a fairly short walk to Piazza Navona and also to the river and Trastevere in the other direction. We even walked to the Colosseum but that was quite a hike. One of the Steves' strolls encompasses that area from Campo dei Fiori to Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Following that might be your best bet.
Skip the Vatican Museum and do one or more of the walking tours in the RS Rome guidebook.
Where to stroll in Trastevere? Which streets would you suggest. We were told that some parts ( maybe near the river) are interesting but away from the river more modern and less interesting.
Would appreciate any thoughts on specific streets as we will have limited time there.
Thanks
To see the best of Trastevere, use Rick's walking tour. It hits the highlights well.
