Now that we have decided on the Rome departure it will be necessary to find a decent hotel near the airport, any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

There is a Hilton that is directly connected to the airport via an overhead walkway. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the hotel to the terminal. I have stayed there and it is a nice hotel.

unless you have an early flight, stay in Rome itself. There is nothing to do out at the hotels by the airport, plus they are expensive. You can take a taxi or the Leonardo Express train from downtown Rome to the airport on your departure day.

You've made a good point the flight isn't till 12:30 or so, that would give us time to have a bit of colazione in Roma and then head out. Thanks for the advice.

The ride from the historical center of Rome to the airport is only 30-35 min. There is no need to stay near the airport regardless of whether it's an early flight or not. Unless you stay at the hilton inside the airport, all others will take at least 10-15 min. To me saving 15 min to get there is not worth wasting my last evening in Italy near Fiumicino.
