Best rental car pick up - Rome to Civita di Bagnoregio

I know the common advice for those staying in Rome and beginning their Tuscany stay is to take the train to Orveito and then rent a car there at the Hertz station. However, I am so inspired to Civita di Bagnoregio and noticed it was 30 minutes South of Orvieto. This would put us a bit off track for us to make it to our final destination near Montepulciano later that evening.

Is there another train station with a convenient car rental facility before Orveito that would prevent us from back tracking? Or is it really that difficult to rent a car from Rome? Or are there suggestions on better car rental locations just outside of the city center of Rome near the major highways so we don't have to worry about the dreaded ZTLs?

I would appreciate the advice!

Hi,

Orvieto is really the way to go unless you are trying to pick up a car on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday. The backtracking from Orvieto is better than going out to one of the airports to pick up a car and I would not recommend driving in Rome.

Hope this helps,
