Best rental car company at Bologna train station?

Hello!

Trying to make a reservation for a rental car online, pick up and return will be at Bologna train station. There is many companies near the train station. I am used to see on Google abysmal reviews about the rental car companies, no matter which one it is. However, this time I am very surprised to see that Sixt gets a 4.5/5! Is it really that good? Is it worth it to pay double the price of Europcar (with a 3.1/5 rate on Google) in order to get a better services, possibly a cleaner and better functioning car... and less scams (From the review I read Europcar in Bologna seems to check like a maniac the fuel level even if it's returned with a full tank they will charge for the few km it took between the gas station and the rental return).

Go to www.autoeurope.com, a broker.
Select Bologna All Locations as pick up and drop off location.
Then check the best deals and where they are (all locations in Bologna are either at the airport or the train station and the airport will almost certainly be more expensive.
Select the deal that works best for you.
Make sure you select the No Deductible under the insurance coverage option. Maybe $6-$9 per day more, but you buy peace of mind.
Forget reviews. They are all franchises and they are there to get you for the smallest ding (deductibles are at least 1000€). If you purchase the no deductible option they don’t even look at the car when you return it.

Thank you for your answer Roberto! I took a look at the website you suggested. The zero deductible option cost between 30-50$ per day. I do not see a 5-6$ rate. I will look further into it but I wonder how to get that kind of rate which would be much better.

I meant to say that the difference between choosing the No Deductible option and not choosing that option is less than $10.

The $50 daily rate you are seeing is the whole rental rate. I hope you don’t think you can rent a car for $6 a day. That is not going to happen.

I just tested a random 3 days next month and a midsize car was $107 ($36/day) without the no deductible option or $153 ($51/day) with the no deductible. So actually in this case it costs $15/day more. However if you rent for a whole week, the no deductible is $289, without No Deductible it drops to $226, so the extra cost is $9 a day. I guess the longer you rent the car for, the less the no deductible option costs.

Roberto, thanks again for your answer. Rest assured, I never entertained the thought that a car could be rented for 6$ a day. I was specifically writing about the price of the deductible.

We did rent a car in Bologna train station in November 2023. I made reservation through booking.com. Price was very reasonable. It is actually went down in time. I booked like 3 months in advance, then i looked again like 2 weeks before the trip and price was much lower. So i just rebook it. Company name was SicilyByCar. You need to walk a little to their office. It is about 5 min walk from station. It is very small office there. Car was in garage next door. I don’t remember the name of the car. But it was nice, clean, low miles car. Don’t forget to obtain international driver license. You can do it for $40 in AAA insurance office here in USA. We had international driver license and they did ask for that.
I hope all this info will help :-)

I think you should expect to pay about $50/day, with full NO DEDUCTIBLE insurance for a compact/midsize car. It will be somewhat more if you rent in July and August. That is the average I spend every year when I go in June.

You can't decline CDW insurance in Italy, like you do when you rent at home. Of course you can save a bit by not purchasing the No deductible option, but then you become liable for the potential deductibles in case of damage (deductibles will be at least 1000€).

If you decide not to take that NO DEDUCTIBLE option, make sure your credit card reimburses you for the deductible (which you will be asked to pay on the spot when you return the car). It doesn't take much to incur in hundreds of $$ in deductibles, a minor scratch or a stone crack on the windshield will do it (and somehow they will find a scratch, even if you didn't do it, so take plenty of photos of your car when you pick it up).

When you do your comparison shopping on other sites, other than AutoEurope, make sure that you compare apples to apples. You may be shown a lower rate, but that rate may not include the NO Deductible option, and if you buy that option on the spot, when you show up at the agency (and believe me, they will try to push you to buy it) you will pay more than doing so in advance.
