Looking for a cute little town to spend Christmas. Already been to all the BIG cities and want to "dig my heels" in with the locals for a week.
Already looked at that video. Looking for something NOT on the RS radar. Less tourists, which so many of his ideal spots are now full of tourists.
oops..should have been more specific. I am looking for a small quaint town in Italy! I want to really experience a TRUE italian Christmas.
We spent two weeks in the little town of Soriano nel Cimino (near Viterbo) about an hour north of Rome. It is convenient to the A-1 autostrada and the Orte train station for traveling to and from Rome. About 30 minutes from Orvieto. also convenient for day trips to Tuscany, Umbria, and Tuscia. You might find a couple of Americans hanging around there but that's about it. Wonderful main square that is unremarkable in architecture but the townspeople really hang out there and there is always some entertainment or event happening in the square. Big castle on the hilltop that is lighted at night. It was a very charming nontouristy place. We'd go back in a heartbeat. Nice place to stay is Palazzo Catalani right in town. Otherwise, I don't recall any motels. There are agriturismos in the area. The American at this website has rentals at his home: http://www.culturediscovery.com/
How about Sulmona? Good chance of some snow and an easy bus ride from Rome.
Sulmona would be fabulous. I was there for the first time last summer. I doubt you would run into any tourists. Probably anywhere in the Abruzzi mountains would be great.
I would vote for Montalcino
Jackie, I just sent you a PM with a suggestion. Pistoia
