We will be traveling to Sorento in July and looking for some great private tours - we will be there for 5 days. Active Family of four - Traveling with two teenagers. There are so many - we are overwhelmed. Things not to miss...suggestions please! We are foodies - if at all possible we’d like to avoid tourist traps and enjoy life in Sorrento - the beauty- sea-food - wine - tradition.
tkolbus, we really didn't find tours necessary at all in Sorrento or anywhere else in that area, for that matter. A good guidebook is really all you need. The one exception might be Pompeii? We did it on our own by with a book but some tourists prefer an organized tour of that one. The excavation (scavi) is huge and can be confusing if one doesn't pay close attention to a map, and narration from a human versus reading can be a personal preference. Rick also provides a downloadable audio guide that some of the forum posters have liked.

We haven't done this but you might take a look at the City Sightseeing bus for Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast?

(Edited note: I don't know if you're going to Rome but do not use their hoho tours in that one.)
Sorrento, or the parts you'll want to see, anyway, is not all THAT big so it won't take that much time to explore it. With 5 days to spend, you'll probably want to take in Pompeii (it will be VERY hot; go first thing in the morning!) and the ferries/SITA buses/sightseeing bus around to, say Positano, Capri or Ravello. The region will be very busy in July.
In Rick’s guide book, he mentions tours with Mondo Tours and they’ve received favorable reviews on this site. Might be just what you’re looking for at reasonable prices.
I took the Mondo Amalfi Coast tour and enjoyed it very much. It's a full day tour at a good price and stops in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. I also recommend a leisurely lunch or dinner at the Delfino restaurant in Sorrento. Delicious food in a beautiful setting right on the water (our table was actually on a pier over the water).

Have to agree, the Mondo tours,
Are going to be better than the City Siteseeing tour. Cost for the bus tour is €26,50 each way. It's not a hop on off tour.
Their tours in Naples by contrast are a wonderful way to see the city.
Edit: agree with Kathy, Rome tour is worthless.
Yep, I'd agree with all of the above that if you can make the Mondo tours work, those are a good choice. It all depends on what sort of tour you want, how many people you're able to book, and what you're willing to pay.
If you want private tours check out www.romeinlimo.com We used them last time and will use them again this time for a different area. Very tailored to what you want to do/see. The drivers/guides are amazing!! Cannot recommend them enough.
