My daughter in doing a semester in Rome and asked me to suggest the best places she could easily day trip from Rome, she has already been to Florence for a long weekend, and has taken day trips to Assisi, Orvieto, Villa Lante and Villa Farnesi, I told her about Ostia Antica, I am sure there are other great places that 20 year old college students that are into art, food, etc would enjoy.
What are your favs? Thank you ahead for your suggestions as I am so impressed with all the great info the people on this forum share!
Tivoli and the water gardens at the Villa d'Este
Where are the other students going? If she is mature enough to go on her own for a semester abroad I bet she can discover all sorts of things....
Frascati is very nice, so is Castel Gandolfo.
Naples, if for nothing else than the Archeology Museum and the pizza (but there's lots more).
I agree, she should also ask her peers, as they will have the latest information on what's "hot" for 20 year old college students in Rome to see and do.
Your suggestion about Ostia Antica is very good since it is just outside Rome and is the original site of Rome. It is a change of pace and one can get there on public transient quickly and cheaply. It is closed either Sunday or Monday -- can't remember which. TC
Tarquinia and Cervatari are just north of Rome and have incredible Etruscan tombs -- the two sites are quite different. On the trip to Tivoli the Villa Adriana is amazing -- the Ville de-Este and the gardens also worth seeing.
