Best Place to Visit in Italy in December

Thanks to all that answered our question about Venice or Milan - votes went hands down to Venice with concerns about weather duly noted.
Will appreciate some more input and you will soon see why. My wife has never been to Europe - her mission is to meet our daughter - an exchange student in Alicante, Spain - on the Costa del Sol - and then fly home together to Oregon as my daugher is coming home.
Travel dates tentatively 11/26 to 12/14 so they have almost 3 weeks for their dream trip. I am their designated travel planner, but not able to travel due to recent stem cell transplant and lack of immune system.
Stop one is London - hands down choice and they are already picking out tickets to musicals. Estimate 5 days there.
Last stop will be Alicante, Spain - 4-5 days - chance for my daughter to flaunt her fluency and show mom what she has learned.
Middle stop Italy (4-5 days) and after your helpful posts, I am penciling in Venice. My wife, always wanting the best deal, asked what other Italian locations might be better than Venice in December - from a weather standpoint or otherwise - for their one taste of Italy. I am guessing the answer might still be Venice hands down but she asked me to ask - love you dear!
One last thought - any comments on not going to Italy and traveling more in Spain? If they had more time in Spain, they could visit Barcelona and/or Madrid. Thoughts?
It may be that London, Italy(tba) and Alicante will be a wonderful sampler for my girls and I hope they take lots of pictures and bring me back something!
Thanks for your comments.

Richard: the weather in Italy gets better the farther south you go. Venice is in northern Italy. Florence is still pretty far north. Rome is in central Italy. But the bottom line is that December is the second coldest month of the year. Weather.com gives long term average weather data by month.

Not to worry - Sorrento just came up on our radar - definitely farther south to miss the bad weather and told it is charming with possibilities to visit Naples and/or Capri, maybe even Rome? Will wait to see other thoughts and ideas.
Thanks,
Richard
