Hello fellow travelers,
We will be in Rome for several days and then will have two free days before we head to Venice and the Dolomites. Although Florence would be the obvious choice, we would like a less stimulating but still beautiful city to visit. We will be traveling by train. Any suggestions? Lucca comes to mind, but involves 2 trains and is not exactly on the way to Venice. Thanks in advance!
Bologna would be easy and interesting
Bologna, Ferrara, or Ravenna.
You don’t say when the trip is. If it’s in summertime, and you have any interest at all in opera I’d suggest Verona. There’s nothing quite like seeing opera performed in a 2000+ year old Roman amphitheater! Even without opera, it’s a beautiful and very walkable city.
The lakes are beautiful. I’ve not been to Lake Garda, but it’s on the way to Venice and I hear it’s nice.
Padua which is a 30-minute train ride from Venice. If you go to the Scrovegni Chapel buy tickets before leaving home. The other places that work are Bologna and Ferrara.
Ravenna, Verona and Lake Garda are not on the direct train route from the Roma Termini station to the Venezia S. Lucia station.
Thanks, all, for the helpful advice. We will need to go wherever it's easiest via train. I see that Perugia could also be a possibility. Any strong recommendations for Perugia? Again, many thanks.
Perugia will add quite a bit of extra time on the train. The cities of Bologna, Ferrara, and Padova are all on the direct route between Rome and Venice, although the fastest trains do not stop in all of them (only in Bologna).
We love Orvieto but Padua is also very nice.
