Best Place to Stay in Venice before Boarding Cruise

We'll be flying into Venice and would like to see Venice the day before and after we board the cruise. Does it make sense to book rooms near St. Mark's or near the dock?

Just for convenience of travelling I would book rooms closer to the train station of Venezia San Lucia (not Mestre). A couple of excellent hotels close to the train station is Abbazia and Antiche Figure.

Getting to/from St Marks with luggage will be a hassle for just one night.

What Tim said. What's your budget for how many people?

I think Brads idea is right on. If you stay near the boat dock you dont have to haul luggage very far and the last day before the cruise leaves the hotel will allow you to leave your luggage before you leave.

For the sake of the luggage, stay near the cruise port. When you check into the boat, you can spend part of the day in Venice before you need to be onboard for departure. Not much going on on the ship before it daparts, just don't miss it.
