I will be in Venice on 8/29 and 8/30 and Rome on 8/31 and 9/1 and am having a hard time picking a nice place to stay that is not too expensive. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Hotel Mercuiro is wonderful. http://www.hotelmercurio.com/en/
Three years ago it was the least expensive of any of our hotels.
Pensionne Accademia in Venice was great. It is well priced and really central to everything. Good breakfast too.
Try www.cross-pollinate.com, they have listings for hotels in rome, venice, and florence. I booked the hotel Moretti in Rome in Sept. very easily!
We recently stayed in the below and both were reasonably priced and in great locations.

Stayed in a really nice B&B in the Canareggio
distric away from the INCREDIBLE amount of people.
SWELTERING hea!
B&B Al Palazetto at
http://www.invenicetoday.com/accomodations/b&b/canaregio/alpalazzetto/index.htm
and Davide's Website is:

Great rooms...each air conditioned...quiet...within
minutes to Rialto and St. Marc's
Loved it...will go back next year
In Venice the Acca Hotel (www.accahotel.com)
In Rome Nicolas Inn (www.nicolasinn.com)
Have a great time!
We stayed at several great hotels, around your price range. In venice, http://www.pensioneguerrato.it/ We really enjoyed it and actually we checked in just as a group of travelers from Rick Steve's Tours checked out. and then in Rome
We stayed at http://www.gulliverslodge.com/ Gulliver's Lodge, which was great! I mean really really wonderful. It is the newest branch of their small hotel/hostel group, so it isnt in the guide book like the other two are. We decided to go for it, and I would go back again in a heartbeat! 10 minutes from the train station 10-15 from the Roman Forum, 15 minutes by taxi to the Vatican. Get a room with AC!
I also just stayed at the Mercurio and can recommend it highly.
i double the vote for the pensione accademia in venice! it's in a great location in a really great neighborhood . we stayed in a superior room which was about $140 (2 years ago) - it was perfect.
