Best place to stay for 2 nights between Rome and Venice?

Hi all,
I am planning a short Italy tour. I will be in Friedrichshafen and am looking to get a train to some place which is between Rome and Venice, so we can cover each of these per day. I will be carrying heavy luggage, so I thought having a base at some place in between and travelling light to Rome and Venice might be a good idea.

Could anyone suggest me best/cheap places for a 2 night stay?

Thanks!

Bologna. It's 1,5 to Venice and 2 hrs to Rome, when using the high-speed trains. When possible buy those tickets in advance to enjoy considerable discount.

Its an 8-10 hour train trip from Friedrichshafen to Bologna.

You will not have time to go to either Venice of Rome that date. So night 1 is used. The next day you can go to one or the other and spend night 2 in Bologna, and from your premise you then have to go somewhere. else...? . you need a 3rd night so you have another day to go to the 'other' city.

Really think you should pick one and spend both nights in one place.

Thank you for the responses.
Is Bologna a cheaper place to live as compared to Rome or Venice (or staying at both the places for 1 night each?)

Also, my plan is to travel from Friedrichshafen to Salzburg and spend a day there, and take a late train into bologna (direct) and then spend 2 days to visit rome and venice (1 day each).

It's not close to halfway (only 90 minutes away from Rome) but the Umbrian hilltown of Orvieto would be something totally different from both Rome & Venice and would be a nice respite besides.

Thank you for the suggestions. Upon looking for train connections, there is only 1 train which is direct to bologna which leaves at night. Are there any other places which you could suggest with a direct train from salzburg?
