Best place to stay around Siena to visit San Gimignano,Volterra, Florance,

Hi, We are travelling from Rome to see Tuscany for 6 nights and then go to Lake Como. We thought of staying in Montepulciano for three nights to see Pienza and the surrounding area. We thought of staying somewhere near Siena for another 3nights to travel to San Gimignano, Volterra and Florance.
Could anyone advice if this is a good way to see the region ,if so could you advice on a good area to base camp for the latter.
Thank you

Yes, it sounds good. I'd say you really can't go too far wrong with any of the charming towns in the region as your base camp. You'll be renting a car, yes?

We did something similar our first trip to Italy: 3 nights Montalcino in our case, and 3 in Siena. Montepulciano and Montalcino are on opposite ends of a beautiful drive which included Pienza. I recommend that drive for one day. Near Montalcino is the Abbey of Sant'Antimo (closes from Noon-15:00 last I knew) which is worth a visit (very scenic), and near Montepluciano is the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore which is fabulous. Also closes for a few hours midday, 12:00-15:00. The latter sells great wine and olive oil as well as herbal remedies and soaps the monks make. Wonderful area to explore.

We visited Volterra from Siena. We did not stop in San Gimignano that trip, but you could. Florence is easily visited from Siena, but do it by bus, not car.

Siena can be a challenge for parking a rental car. Be sure to consult your hotelier for advice.

Maybe consider an agriturismo for one of the stays.

We like Borgo Argenina which is close to Castellina in Chianti and Cretaiole which is closer to Montepulciano. Both Elena and Isabella cook with their guests. It is such a fun evening to experience after you spent the day tootling around the villages in your car. Then you all sit down family style with your new friends and eat and drink wine !

Frances Lodge is a great B&B above Siena where you can park easily and can walk down into town for evening strolls.

Thank you all for all your input. Yes, we plan on renting a car. Definitely plan to visit Florance by train or bus for a day trip from Siena. Would love to stay in a farm or B&B . Any good suggestions other than the ones mentioned above?
Thank you once again.

There is a great Agro place on the outskirts of Siena, Malefresca. About 70 E/night. Full kitchen, parking, very nice people.

We are fond of Poggio-Etrusco, an agriturismo near Montepulciano. Fabulous American hosts, beautiful rooms and apartments.
