I will be in Venice and looking to rent a car to travel to the Dolomite's. Where is the best, least chaotic and most convenient, place to pick up the car? Should I take a train to a different city?

You can pick up a car at Piazzale Roma
No need to train to a diff city

just take it easy on the causeway. Low speed limit, camera controlled, no leeway.

You can rent at Piazzale Roma, but for me I would rather take the train one stop across the causeway to Mestre and rent from there, to avoid the monstrous traffic of Piazzale Roma and the causeway.

As already mentioned, we have rented at Piazzale Roma twice, then driven to the Dolomites.
