Any tips on the best place in Venice to find a gondola for an evening cruise around scenic, quiet canals?

You'll discover that you can pick up a gondola all over the place in Venice, for example Campo San Barnaba in Dorsoduro will have a couple of guys hanging around. Avoid the San Marco area and the Grand Canal if you want quiet.

Michael is right. We just returned the end of May from 10 days in Venice, Florence and Rome before our 14 day Med cruise. We just happened to be wondering around the back of St. Mark's passing little shops, bars, cafes and along one of the little canals was a small gondola stop where we waited a few minutes and one came to drop off a couple people and we got in. We never went on the Grand Canal and he took us through the oldest part of Venice. Very quiet and interesting.
