Best order for Florence's Duomo area?

I'm interested in climbing the campanille, visitting the duomo museum, the cathedral itself and the baptistry. I know it's probably best to start with the tower as it's open early, but then I'm not sure how the crowds will be on the other sites. I plan to be there by 8:00 or so, on a monday in May. It would be interesting to know in advance what to expect in terms of queues.

Also what is the least crowded place to buy the combo ticket that covers every Duomo site?

Thanks!

The Museo dell' Opere del Duomo should be your last stop, in my opinion, it is not as crowded as the other sights and it is rather large, so you can move around the different galleries if one is too crowded. I would start with the baptistery, then the campanile, then the Duomo itself; the museum is behind the Duomo.

I just looked at the website to buy online, but I have a question. Do you have to book your entry to enter the sites? I was under the impression that this was not necessary? The museum is all booked up online for the whole morning and most of the afternoon on the day of my trip, does that mean I won't be able to go in at those hours even if I buy the ticket in person on the spot?

Psyche,I just did a test booking (up to the point of purchase for Monday the 23rd and it's not showing anything as booked up. What's your date?

No I don't think you have to choose a specific time but people who DO reserve those probably get priority.

Ah, it was my mistake. Apparently when you choose the time for one site, a bunch of other times become unavailable on the the others. And then if you clear the time you previously entered, the "booked" (red) times don't reset like they should. So I changed a bunch of stuff back and forth and ended up having almost the entire day for the museum colored red!

Yes, that's what I was wondering. Even if I book I still want to have flexibility to enter any site at other times if I choose to do so (forfeiting the priority of course). I hope that's how it works.

In my experience at other museums, if you miss an appointment time, you may not be able to just walk in whenever you get there. It depends on the entrance personnel, the museum policy, the number of people waiting, but it's not a sure thing. I know that one person told me she missed her reservation time by 35 minutes and had to stand in line (for about an hour).

I would not expect flexibility if I had to book reservation times.

Thanks for the replies, I purchased the ticket online. But I got a message on the ticket saying backpacks are not allowed on either climb (duomo or campanile). Do you know where I'm supposed to store them?
