Best on off bus tour in Rome

On-off can be kind of fun, but don't expect:
1) the earphones to work
2) the buses to be on time
3) the buses to actually stop near the sites

For instance, (and I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the company we used), their stop for the Vatican was not close enough to even know which way to go to get there! We took a taxi instead and it brought us right to the entrance. Only my opinion from my experience.

I agree. These buses can be a good thing for some cities, Roma is not one of them.

Marion, the hoho buses in Rome see lots of complaints and are not the best way to get around. Also, as certain attractions are in pedestrianized areas, stops can be a good walk away from them.

Typical complaints are:
Late buses (get held up in traffic)
Constantly full buses (they go right by the stops)
Dirty vehicles
Hard-to-locate stops
Broken equipment
Surly attendants
No stops located near many attractions

Big Bus seems to currently be the best of the worst (Trip Advisor reviews) but, well, I wouldn't personally spend the money. Public transit and walking are the better options when at all possible.

Adding: looking back at your prior posts, I see that your husband is blind? If you have the budget for it you might consider a driver for a day to take you around? They can usually get closer to the attractions than the buses, and it would eliminate all the other issues with the darn things.

I don't have one I can recommend personally but I'm sure some other readers will have suggestions!

Driver with a pass to park near sites-Emilio Menastre www.customtoursrome.com. Lovely man who would take good care of you amd your husband. Hop on Hop Off buses worthless in Rome as it is heavily predestrianzed zones near antiquities. Emilio can enter those zones with a special permit.
