We have received our final tour package, so now it seems really real. Our best of South Italy in 13 days starts September 10 and we have Lisa Anderson as our guide. We checked out the hotels and the cities and they look wonderful.
We have 5 days in Rome prior to joining our group. This is our first trip to Italy and also our first RS tour can’t wait to meet the group and explore this beautiful country.
This was our first RS trip a few years ago and LOVED it! We arranged tours of sites in Rome through Walks of Italy (including the Vatican) and were very pleased. You will definitely enjoy your trip, and I we loved going in Sept. Enjoy!
Am taking this tour in April 2019. One thing for sure you will love Lisa Anderson as a tour guide. Enjoy!
Thanks for your reply’s looking forward to the trip
nancy,
That's a fantastic tour and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time! As with most RS tours, you'll dine well so might come home a pound or two heavier (and of course there's also the Vino).
Buon Viaggio!
For those who have done this tour can you give me a idea on stairs? I injured my knee a couple of months again walking is no problem and stairs are not bad unless it’s 6 flights in a row or something.
Just trying to prepare but a little nervous I don’t want to slow the group down
Take the easy option whenever you can, like in a museum that has an elevator. My mom stressed her knee toward the start of the trip and that did make it harder for her to enjoy the hilly towns of Alberobello, Matera and Vieste.
Thanks for the advice
nancy,
There are always going to be stairs in Italy, but I don't recall any on that tour that were excessive. I've also had knee problems so can relate to your situation. I've found that if there's a robust hand rail, that helps a lot.
Your situation might be different as you may be staying in different hotels, but a couple of situations that come to mind from my tour.....
- the stairs going down to the hotel in Matera - they had a fairly low rise so weren't difficult to use. There was also a stairway in the hotel going down to the breakfast room, but a good hand rail. I vaguely recall a stairway going down to the Sassi but can't remember the details.
- Vieste hotel had some stairs, but nothing difficult.
- Positano - climbing hills was what I most remember about that. The hotel may have had some stairs, don't recall.
- Sorrento - the hotel my group stayed in had some stairs, but nothing excessive.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Ken!! That sounds like something I can handle especially if there is a handrail. Thanks to everyone who answered my question can’t wait to leave, we fly to Rome Sept 5th.
As others have said...you’ll love this tour! It’s been several years since we were there, but the only serious climbing I can remember (not necessarily stairs) was in Positano. AND....you’ve hit the guide jackpot with Lisa Anderson!
I'm going on this tour a couple of weeks later, Oct. 1-13, and debating about what kind of layers I'd need. The weather info for the tour has average highs of 71 and lows of 55. That's not too cool, so I'm thinking a sweater with a layer should be enough. A real lightweight jacket that doubles as a raincoat would add weight and bulk, so I'm not sure that's worth bringing. I do have a rain poncho in a pouch (bright yellow, so really unattractive!) that I could bring, and could bring a travel umbrella, but with only 7 or so days of rain on average, I could get lucky. I could wear a leather jacket on the plane, although that wouldn't be much help if there were rain. Only carryon, but also need to try to be less than 8kg, so that is a bit of a challenge. Any suggestions from folks who have been on this tour would be most welcome!
Haven't gotten any specific tour info like hotels and guide yet, so looking forward to that!
