Arriving in Rome 2 days before tour start date. Evaluating public transit options. If you have taken the tour did you receive any type of transit pass in Rome compliments of RS Tours? Thanks in advance for your reply.
I’m going
I have not taken the Best of South Italy tour. But, did go on the Best of Venice, Florence & Rome. We had three nights in Rome with the tour. They provided a 3-day Metro pass. We stayed over additional days and purchased a 2-day pass. If I remember correctly it was valid 48 hours from the time of purchase. I hope that was somewhat helpful.
Contact the RS office. Friendly helpful folks
Reading the 'Itinerary', my guess is not.
Ray,
As I recall after several tours, no transit passes are ever provided before the tour starts. I'd suggest just buying a Biglietto giornaliero B.I.G. pass as that will provide transit for one day - https://www.rome.info/transportation/tickets/ . Don't forget to validate the pass prior to first use. Depending on how many times you plan to use transit for your second touring day, you can either buy a second pass or just use P-P tickets.
Hi Ray,
My wife, Linda, and I took this tour in October of 2017. It was fabulous and one of our favorites. We did not receive a transit pass but public transportation is so available and reasonable. Our tour started in Trastevere which is a wonderful neighborhood. We decided we were going to travel like locals and after we arrived at FCO we took to the train to Trastevere and then a tram to the nearest stop to our hotel. It was a little outside our comfort zone but we managed and it set the tone for several tram rides prior to the start of our tour. Our tour packet included instructions for this route. Just relax and enjoy the adventure. Prior to the tour we went to the the Forum and the Colosseum on the tram. We've taken 6 RS tours, all great, but we loved this tour. Our guide, tour mates, food and wine were so so good not to mention some of the most interesting locales ever. Hopefully you will enjoy this tour like we did. For the first reunion tour in Edmonds we had 13 tour mates for dinner, including our guide and this year another 11 showed up.
Our previous tours were The Best of France when it was 17 days, The 21 Day best of Europe, The Best of Eastern Europe, The Best of South Italy and this year we are off to the Best of Eastern Europe.
Keep on Traveling,
Tom
There are 24-hour and 48-hour transit passes available in Rome, good for that many hours from time of validation. They can be purchased at ticket kiosks (easy to use), official ticket windows (Termini has one near the Metro entrance) and at some tobacco shops. Neither pass is very expensive, and I like the convenience even if I'm barely breaking even compared to individual tickets.
You have picked a stellar RST and likely will rave about it yourself upon completion. Of my 7 RSTs, I think this tour has the best variety, breadth and scope of immersing you in the beauty, food and culture of the incredibly diverse south of Italy. Greek and Roman ruins, sure, but cow day spa. Need I say more? No transit pass provided by RS for any of the 6-stops-for-2-nights each on itinerary. Directions to hotel will be provided and fully explained. Should your early arrival have you staying at the tour hotel and it is Hotel Smeraldo, it is reasonably easy (and least expensive) to reach via train to Trastevere, out of that small station and across a parking lot to stop for tram line 8 direction Largo Argentina riding 8 or so stops later reaching your stop for what is then a short walk to the hotel. Fixed fare taxi service from FCO to anywhere within the Aurelian walls €48,00 which is any easy option to choose. As can happen at many airports, be wary of any rogue driver solicitation for your ride and opt for the official taxi queue. Rome's taxis are white. Have a fabulous tour.
