Best neighborhoods in Turin, Italy to stay in

We are planning a trip to Italy for next spring and plan to stay in Tornino for 4 nights. We would like to stay in an apartment and would welcome any suggestions on what neighborhoods to should focus on. Our preference would be not to stay in the centro but walking distance from it in a less touristy area. Any suggestions appreciated.

We stayed in a hotel caddy-corner across from the train station, and the area felt safe. It was an easy walk to most of the popular tourist sites such as the Egypt Museum, Royal Palace, Palazzo Madama & National Cinema Museum. We loved visiting Turin for a week. I would recommend watching the original movie the "Italian Job" with Michael Caine, filmed in Turin. It is a classic, with great shots of mini coopers being driven through the shopping arcades and down church steps of Turin's famous church.

We stayed for 4 nights in an apartment six minutes walk southeast of the Egyptian museum and liked that area very much --- we could walk to everything we wanted to see except for the car museum (highly recommended even if you don't care about cars --- like so many Italian museums, it is creative, approachable, and fun).

Another neighborhood we walked around in a lot, and ate several lunches in, was the Quadrilatero Romano --- this might be an area you could look into: https://www.twopartsitaly.com/blog/2021/10/27/the-quadrilateral-romano-a-different-side-of-torino

I can't think of anything touristy about Torino.

Thanks for your response; it is great to hear that it is not that touristy of a city. I too have heard good things about the car museum and plan to visit it while we are in Turin.

Just returned from an Italy trip that included Turin for 4 nights & I can confirm that it is NOT touristic & is fairly contained so that staying anywhere in the downtown area will work. The only sites that required public transport were the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile & the original Eataly (I recommend both). These sites are very near each other and can be combined for a nice excursion outside of immediate downtown Torino. Do the car museum in the AM and have lunch at Eataly after. Transport was easy, inexpensive and only a half hour ride on the Metro.

Also, check out the Lavazza Museum! Even if you are not a coffee aficionado you will enjoy it. It is so well done -- learning about its founder Luigi Lavazza and everything that goes into the production of coffee. At the conclusion of the tour/museum you are offered various coffees to try - really fun! Here is a link:

I also recommend this apartment (Suite Florio). It is very well maintained, excellent location, has a washer & dryer (important to us as we were traveling for 3 weeks) beautifully maintained quiet elevator building, and 2 SMART TVs to watch Netflix after a busy day. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts after visiting Turin. Unfortunately we cannot consider the apartment you stayed in as we need a place for 4 people. Are definitely planning on visiting the car museum but did not know about the Lavazza museum but will add it to the list of things to do.

You are most welcome! Enjoy your time in Torino.

I also wanted to mention that if you happen to be there on a Saturday there is a FREE Welcome to Torino Tour given by the Tourist Bureau. I'm assuming this will continue again in 2025 (from march to October) Below you will find the link. They also conduct other tours but they are not free but are rather reasonable in cost.

I would suggest the Cit Turin neighborhood of Torino, a few minutes walk from the city's newer train station, Porta Susa, and the limited, but useful metro station. Cit Turin sits on the edge of the Centro, with wonderful covered sidewalks all the way to the heart of the Centro (Via Cernaia, Corso Vitt. Emmanuele, etc), but the Centro begins at Porta Susa and the adjacent Piazza Statuto. Via Garibaldi, a pedestrian-only (not covered, but with many fun bars with outdoor seating along the way) shopping street, begins at the Piazza and ends at the city's historic Piazza Castello (1.3 km), where several historic palaces and buildings are located. While there would be more walking (or metro, or bike, etc.) to get to downtown sites or the Po River, this is THE neighborhood for seeing the City's turn-of-the-century Stile Liberty (Art Nouveau) and Gothic Revival buildings, like the very distinctive House of Dragons, many of which are found on Corso Francia. A large number of Turin's residential buildings were restored in 2022-23, so the beautiful Liberty decoration is at its brightest these days.

My husband grew up in Cit Turin, before moving to the U.S. to study. We have stayed many times over the years at Star Residence on Via Susa, a friendly, well-run hotel that also offers long-term stay (all of the rooms have a kitchenette) and they have an interior courtyard for secure parking. There are many restaurants in the neighborhood, numerous "super" markets + a large "Bio" (organic) market open all day, and a 6 days/week open-air market on Piazza Benefica, one of the city's best. There are several gardens and parks, too, very near the Star, if you travel with a pet (we once stayed there 4 months with ours).

I am partial to the neighborhood, having visited it for almost 40 years, but it is charming, quiet at night, unlike the Centro, and offers a slice of "real life" while touring.
